THE ZONE.
Le Cure is a residential neighborhood of Florence, located immediately north of the historic center. In ancient times, this area north of Porta San Gallo and Porta a Pinti was open countryside and in 1520 was the site of the apparition and miracle of Our Lady of the Oaks at Le Cure.
The Le Cure district developed as a residential neighborhood following the expansion of the city with the works of Florence Capital. Until then it had been a small settlement outside the historic city walls, devoted for centuries to the manufacture of ropes and textiles, and arose here because of the presence of the Mugnone stream, which guaranteed the water essential for such craft activities. Along the banks of the Mugnone worked the rope makers and curandai. The former made ropes and ropes by making them from the skeins of hemp they spread along the waterway. Instead, the latter washed, bleaching them (in Latin "cura" is synonymous with mondatura and hence "curandai"), the linen cloths with ranno, that is, with water filtered with ash and boiled, then washed again, rinsed and spread on the threads placed on the banks of the stream.
